Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system that blends modern scientific research with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The focus of naturopathic care is centered on the individual, their health, medical and family histories, as well as their lifestyle habits all of which contribute to the diagnosis and treatment plan. The primary treatment goal is to treat the root cause of the disease by selecting treatments that are unique to the individual and how their body is affected by the disease process. The treatment plan is designed to stimulate the body’s inherent capacity to heal itself. Modalities include clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy and traditional Chinese medicine. Naturopathic Doctors can assist patients in resolving acute and chronic illnesses and are trained to recognize emergent situations and refer out when necessary.

Naturopathic Principles:
- First, do no harm
- Identify and treat the cause of disease
- The healing power of nature
- Doctor as teacher
- Treat the whole person
- Prevention

Naturopathy is a regulated health profession in Ontario, with registered practitioners receiving over 1,200 hours of supervised clinical experience, and trained with a patient centred approach. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) obtain comprehensive and rigorous training, requiring four years of pre-medical university education, followed by four years of full-time medical study by an approved College of Naturopathic Medicine. In order to qualify for licensing in Ontario, NDs must successfully complete two sets of Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations, the standard examination used by all regulated provinces and states across North America. They are also required to successfully complete practical exams; a requirement by the licensing board, the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO), to register and practice as a Naturopathic Doctor in Ontario. Once in practice NDs are required to earn continuing education credits to maintain their licence active and remain in good standing with the provincial regulatory body, CONO.
